The park that we typically practice at is on the back side of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. For those who have never heard of Rose Hulman, that's the school the the MIT students wanted to get into. For those of us who got less than a 1500 on our SAT's (or in my case MUCH lower) it is that home of Indianapolis Colts trianing camp. Thursday night I was finishing up as the Colts were getting out and got to say hi to several of the starters...sorry when you run 100 miles in a week you don't have a lot of other high points.
On the book front I'm about a 100 pages into my next book by Sandra Brown,
Ricochet. It seems pretty good so far but I'll keep you posted. The weather this summer has been GREAT. The high today is 79...in August it's usually 99 so I'm about as happy as you can get. Great training weather and I starting to taper...
I don't like to make long posts, so I try to post more often rather than put it all in at once...while this isn't one of those times, sorry.
1. Hammer the training again right now for my return to Ragnar (we are doing the 12 person division this year) and then my big 50 miler coming up in September. I was just short of 90 last week (88) with the tough 3 x 2 mile workout on Tuesday, a hill workout on Friday and 2 hours yesterday. Even with a race on Friday night this will be another big milage week for me.
2. Summer condition is going well for the team I help coach. We can't have official practice until August but we have had great turn out from our varsity runners all summer long. It is very true that the more the merrier. When you get good turn out you have more fun and the more fun you have more people want to come. I'm lucky to work with a great group of kids.
3. It is HOT here. It is 90's and humid. The humidity makes it bad, but it could be A LOT WORSE. We've had triple digits this time of year so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is as bad as it gets...
4. New book I've been reading is Killer Dreams. It's ok but I have several pretty good ones waiting for me once I finish this one so I'm hurrying to move on.
5. As I said in 1 I have a "race" on friday. It is the 5K were I ran 15:24 last year. They are changing the course AGAIN. I hate when they do that. With my training where it is I'm just hoping for sub 16 but we'll see. Anytime you're training like I am races are very much hit and miss.
Stay cool everyone. I'll post the info about this weekends race.
Lets see where to start...
1. I've been reading as usual. I finished reading "I am Legend" Let me tell you the book and the movie are alike in title only. Book is a little bit of a let down. It's a very short story with little happening. I'm reading "Honeymoon" by Paterson right now, I'll keep you posted on how it is. (I'm only half done)
2. We had a flood here last weekend. I was stuck in my subdivision all weekend. I was very lucky to have had no damage to my house so I'm not complaining. I've never seen so much water.
3. My race is this weekend. The race I put on. Due to some last minute drop outs I will be running on my wife's relay team. It should be interesting to see the race from the runners veiw and it will be a great chance for me to improve some little things to make next years race even better. www.hawthornhalfdayrelay.com
Best wishes everyone.

2. Running with the Buffalos ... I happened to be in college racing these guys at the time,...
1. Once a Runner... Best running book ever (fictional story about breaking 4:00 in the mile
If you have any other good one's let me know....
If you ask me which one is worse...the nerves before you run a big race or the nerves before your kids run a big race (as a coach)...NO QUESTION!!! As a coach you feel so helpless. Friday and Saturday nights are the girls and boys state meets respectively and I'm not sure I can handle another nightmare like the one last fall in cross country. I can't say more because I no longer speak of the state meet from cross...I've blocked it out...too painful.
One the training front, I ran 6 x 1000 last night. The plan was to run the stair step plan (average 5 seconds faster per 1000). So I ran 3:27/ 3:18/ 3:17/ 3:12/ 3:08/ 2:55 ... (pace chart 3:20 = 5:20 mile pace / 3:07 = 5:00 pace / 2:55 = 4:40 pace) the workout felt great...It's been a while since one has felt good.
To complete my jumping all over the map here, I just finished another book, Duma Key by Stephen King. If you like Kings earlier books you will like this one. He had some there for a while the got really strange but one is more like alot of his earlier stuff. Enjoy the spring, summers heat is just around the corner.
Lately this state of mass confusion in which I'm always busy but nothing gets done hs been WAY too much. It realy seems like I'm constantly doing something but I feel so out of touch with everything. Here's what I do know...
1. We are in the toughest conference in the state in Track and Cross. Friday night we finished 7th on both the boys and the girls sides and won only TWO events. (3200 on both girls and boys sides) It was in Indianapolis so we got home at like 12:30 am.
2. Josh is finally on the mend. My buddy who had a tumor removed from his calf a year and a half ago dropped 30 seconds in 30 days from his 5K PR. He ran 15:38 putting him on good pace to make the team at ISU in the fall. Even though ISU had 6 underclassman break 15:00 Saturday night.
3. My workout on Saturday SUCKED!!! Not because it was windy and slow (which it was) but because I felt like crap doing it. (2 x 800 "2:29/ 2:29" / 4 x 400 "68/69/68/69" / 8 x 200 "30/30/30/31/32/31/31/30")
4. Last nights track meet got cancelled because of the snow/hail/sleet...so much for spring being here. Now if it keeps me from having to mow the lawn again quit so soon I'll be set.
5. I'm about half done with "The Traveler" and it is an interesting book. It's not my normal type of book but hey I'll read about anything.
Hope everyone is doing good, sorry I haven't keep up with everyoen the last few weeks but everything has been nuts.
I made it through last nights 8 x 1000 with Scot. I ran 3:04/3:04/3:05/3:08/3:09/3:12/3:08/3:00. Scot averaged under 3:00. Just as a reference 3:00 pace is a 4:48 mile. I took my active rest after the Sam Costa half and over the next couple weeks I'll be getting back into training. I have started a new book though. I'm less than 100 pages in so I don't yet have an opinion of it. It's called "The Traveler". Seems to be popular but I'll have to let you know.
Not much going on. The training has been in recovery mode the last 2 weeks, so not much to write home about (or blog home as it may be). I am reading a good book right now. This following a not so good book that I finished a week ago.
Anyway the new book is The Witness but Sandra Brown. I'm not finshed yet so don't give me the ending if you've read it before. It has very disturbing parts, so if you don't like to read about volience then I will add this disclaimer. As for the other book Harriers, it's interesting if you are a runner, outside of that it is not that good of a book. I'm going to be getting back on the training wagon shortly and I'm sure the track season should shape up to be interesting so I'll keep you posted. Enjoy the spring everyone.
I'm soooo soar today. Tuesdays are workout days and training is going "well". "Well", however means that my workouts are a bit ubsurd. Yesterday is a workout I've done before (and even a couple more), but yesterday was 6 x Mile. The plan was to run 5:15-5:20 pace...well like I said running "well" means that we never hit that. 5:04/ 5:08/ 5:03/ 5:05/ 5:08/ 5:08 The course was all dirt trails and rolling so I'm pleased with the pace. Scot put the hammer down on me at the end and ran 4:57 on the last one. (He's the bad man) I'm trying to finish my current book before the weekend. (The Harry Potter book will be out...yes, I'm a freak). Anyway the current book is "First Council", by Brad Meltzer. I'm becoming a Meltzer fan. His books are a lot like Baldacci's. David Baldacci is great, if you haven't read "Camel Club" you must. If you know any good books let me know. I'm a big reader and will read just about anything. Enjoy the weather.
